Gardening Soil
The perfect soil does not exist and most gardeners have with any type or leave the house, they Builder. The soil itself ultimately governs which plants grow well and anyone who doubts this should try to grow rhododendrons on chalk or lime. This plant and an alkaline soils are incompatible. Soils in the UK vary enormously between heavy and light clay sand. A child can tell the difference between muddy clods of clay and dry sand grains, and these physical differences are in the garden.
Clay consists of tiny particles so small that they cling together and will not be easy so that water to move between them. They have the same effect on a spade or the root of a plant. Sand, on the other hand, the relatively large grains. They are so great that water washes away easily, and the remainder drains away a lot of nutritional supplements material. They are so loose that sand will decant Spatenstich and little support for a root system.
It is a definition of the two extremes and the particle size between them, but the gardener can say as a rule to a glance or a product. Science can tell the gardener the chemical constituents of soil in minute detail, but all that most people know whether the soil acidic or alkaline. Some plants show a marked preference for one or the other as a simple check child from the garden store or in the middle of the gardener a lot of frustrated efforts.
Test is simply a matter of mixing a sample of soil with a chemical to the color reading. Acidity or alkalinity is usually expressed as the number of Ph. Seven is neutral. Any number of seven is increasingly acidic and any number of seven progressively alkaline. Most plants like the soil to Ph6. 5, is only on the acid side of neutral.
Your garden soil needs Food
The gardener is called compost. It can convert almost any organic substance, and, except in Fenland soil type, where the soil is composed of half-rotted vegetation, there will always be in favor of the garden. Thrown from cooking vegetables (not root vegetables), horse or farmyard manure, straw, in the hope, even wool or waste products, together with the obvious from the garden green, red on the form of compost.
It is the cheapest way to a healthy fertile soil. Compost pile will differ in structure and content, but they all need air and water, if too dry, wet or airless, they are not red or hot enough to destroy the seeds of plants or crops and may encourage disease.
Two or three square boxes about forty centimeters wide are useful for the average size garden. A fully for the distribution, others decompose, and the third filled is an ideal routine. If the boxes are made of wood, half-inch gaps between each Spank is an air and a solid cover or polyethylene, the compost is too wet. As each layer of refuse is accounted for by the heap a pinch of nitro-chalk or commercially produced rotting agent help bacteria to the vegetation.
A light dusting of lime should be every few layers to prevent acid-structure, which prevent the complete breakdown of vegetation. Quick decay by moisture and heat, April to October are the best months.
Garden & Mulching Liming
The garden can be improved by mulching and limiting or throwing a layer of loose organic material on the ground. Bulky organic matter such as straw, peat, lawn mowing or soft green hedge clipping, only scattered on the ground will prevent the surface is compacted, slow down evaporation of moisture, smother weeds before they grow slowly and in the red bottom.
It sounds almost too good to be true, but there are difficulties. As always in the garden, to keep a balance, while increasing bacterial activity in a mulch on the surface, a gardener can robs soil of nitrogen. So quickly, the nitrogen fertilizer added ten days to two weeks after the mulching is the right condition.
Mulching looks messy, especially with straw, but the benefits are considerable, and many gardeners mulch the view that a difference between rows of vegetables such as peas and sprouts helps prevent their own feet trampling top soil.
The last major problem of Mulching is that the plant material breaks down it creates acids. These are not necessarily harmful, but they slow the plant growth through interaction with materials such as calcium. Excessive acidity by the addition of lime to the soul in one of the following forms:
1 lime, as the name says is fast. It can often generate enough heat to react with a moist soil, to act as insecticide.
2 Hydrated lime is working with almost the same speed as lime, but it can be more pleasant.
3 White chalk or finely ground limestone may be used in larger quantities than limestone, the same results.
