What Is The Easiest Way To Start To Compost?

I know it is basically dirt and paper and food scraps, but if someone who composts could answer a few of my questions I would be grateful. How long does it generally take to make compost from scraps? Does it smell? Does it attract animals?
Thanks!!

What is compost? It is organic fertilizer and lots of fun to make.
“Decomposed organic material that is produced when bacteria in soil break down garbage and biodegradable trash, making organic fertilizer. Making compost requires turning and mixing and exposing the materials to air. Gardeners and farmers use compost for soil enrichment. The relatively stable humus material that is produced from a composting process in which bacteria in soil mixed with garbage and degradable trash break down the mixture into organic fertilizer.”
    1. How to Make Compost, be sure to scroll down the screen and read ALTERNATE COMPOSTING METHODS. My husband and I make compost in a plastic garbage can each summer just for fun. Check out this link:http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/…

I LOVE THIS QUESTION . . . because I started composting last year with my own little invention . . . and it works GREAT !!!! Here goes. I purchased two standard size Rubbermade garbage cans. I then cut several good size holes on the very bottom, and around the sides about 1/3 of the way up. The holes should be about the size of your fist. Then I dug holes in the ground behind my garage and buried the garbage cans side by side about half way deep. The holes serve as entrances for worms and other critters that help in the decomposition process. Then I put dark mulch around the outside of the cans to retain heat and moisture in the summer and winter. You can throw everything in there except meat products. Egg shells are great, weeds, grass clipping, shredded newspaper etc. Then you occasionally rotate the compost from one bin to another with a pitch fork. This is the MOST important factor. On hot summer days I will take the lids off and occasionally pour in some water. Again . . . rotation of the compost is key . . . . about once a week. Compost must maintain a certain temperature to kill bacteria, weeds, and other unwanted organisms (I think it’s about 110 degrees. When I take the lids off . . . you can feel the heat. If you do compost properly there will be NO SMELL . . . and I have had ZERO critter problems. It takes about 6 months to get GOOD compost . . . but with my two bin system I always have ready to use compost. I used it in my garden this year and the plants were noticably larger than they were last year. Our neighbor says it’s the garden on steroids. Have fun !!!
