How Long Does Compost In Flower Beds Attract Flies And Smell Bad?

We had compost put down on our flower beds. Now we have a lot of annoying flies, and the smell's not so great. When do they go away?

Sounds like either your compost was too wet or there was steer manure put into that compost. Good compost smells earthy, not rotten so I gather the compost wasn’t quite ready yet.
The flies will go away when the compost dries, in a few more days, unless you get rain and the stuff rejuvenates.

The compost you bought was not finished. Compost should smell like good dirt. It will have a very earthy smell. It won’t attract flies.
It is possible that you bought composted manure which was not composted long enough. Manures need at least a year to break down so that the nitrogen in the manure doesn’t burn the plants.

The compost was not ready to be used. There should not be anything in the “compost” that the flies would be attracted to. See steps 2-4 here http://www.simplemakes.com/2008/09/apartment-composting-how-to-start-now.html for how to recognize ready-to-use compost.

It is possible your compost was not ready for plants yet. You may need to try a touch of bug killer. Check out this answer. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

Properly made compost doesn’t smell bad and doesn’t attract flies. “Properly made” meaning that the breakdown of materials is completed.
