Last year I convinced a man to keep the large heavy wooden box (with top/ad air holes) he had to make compost. The start of the compost was torn up wet news paper and night crawlers.
The worms eat the news paper, also pieces of old lettuce, left over bread crust etc… were thrown in every couple of days. As a result the man was selling night crawlers left and right for fishing. Then finding more to put in the box.
In the end, the man made money selling bait and had a great garden compost when he was done.

A good compost is made up of only organic plant material. Only non cooked material. Bacteria will break it all down. The more often you turn it over the quicker it will break down. If it’s on the ground, it will draw it’s own worms. You don’t have to add them.

Sure, I put my nightcrawlers in a compost bin filled with old leaves and then add other vegetable matter. The worms are happy, I’m happy, and my flowers end up happy.

I have a 40 foot compost bed that was leaf and grass compost and then I added a lot of horse manure and red worms. I can hardly believe what I got after 2 years. light fluffy soil.I’m sure a lot of it is worm castings. Have filled some planter boxes with it so will just wait and see what happens. I fave also started o lot of seeds in 1/2 compost and 1/2 commercial putting soil. plants have grown better than normal in this mix
